American Red Cross - Wilderness and Remote First Aid Course

The American Red Cross is introducing the newly revised Wilderness and Remote First Aid program. This program is designed to teach individuals how to deal with emergency situations by using first aid skills in a delayed-help environment. The program is based on the 2010 Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines and offers enhanced content and topics to meet OSHA’s Best Practices for Workplace First Aid Training Programs and has been updated to reflect the latest emergency cardiovascular care science.

The Wilderness and Remote First Aid program is appropriate for audiences from youth-serving organizations as well as adults who participate in outdoor recreational activities or who work in wilderness or remote settings where emergency medical services (EMS) response is more than 1 hour away. The Wilderness and Remote First Aid program emphasizes experiential learning and major portions of the course are meant to be taught in outdoor settings. The program content has been revised to encompass ECCU 2015 and current guidelines by the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council. American Red Cross - CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers (Online W/Skills)

ARC Professional Rescuer

(Adult, Child, & Infant)
Onliine Course time: 2.0 – 2.5 Hours

In Class Course time: 1.0 – 1.5 Hours

The purpose of the American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers program is to train professional-level rescuers to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. This program is offered in traditional classroom or blended learning (online learning with instructor-led skill session) formats.

Certification Requirements:

Classroom (traditional classroom, instructor-led)
Attend the entire course.
Participate in all skill sessions and scenarios.
Demonstrate competency in all required skills and scenarios.
Pass the final written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent (20 Correct answers out of 25 questions).
Blended Learning (online learning and instructor-led skills session).
Complete all lessons of the online learning session and pass the online Assessment with a score of at least 80%.
Participate in all course activities.
Demonstrate competency in all required skills.

Respirator fit testing is actually mandatory under OSHA regulations. According to OSHA, If workers do require respiratory protection, then employees, “shall be allowed to pick the most acceptable respirator models and sizes so that the respirator is acceptable to, and correctly fits, the user,” This means that each respirator should be examined so that it fits the needs of the employee. Fortunately, we offer qualitative respirator fit testing in southern California.

Qualitative Fit Testing is a pass/fail test method that uses your sense of taste or smell to detect leakage into your respirator face piece. Whether the respirator passes or fails the test is based simply on you detecting leakage of a test substance into your face piece. In accordance with OSHA rules and regulations, we utilize the following test substances

Isoamyl accetate (smells like bananas)
Saccharin (leaves a sweet taste in your mouth)
Bitrex (leaves a bitter taste in your mouth)
Irritant smoke (may cause coughing)

Qualitative fit testing does not measure the actual amount of leakage; on the contrary, your respirator fails the test if the test substance leaks into your face piece.

Quantitative Fit Testing uses a machine to measure the actual amount of leakage into the face piece. The respirators used during this type of fit testing will have a probe attached to the face piece that's connected to the mach95

Quantitative fit testing is normally used for half-mask respirators--those that just cover your mouth and nose. Half-mask respirators can be filtering face piece respirators--often called "N95s"--as well as elastometric respirators
